ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing is pleased to announce that Danilo Estrela will compete for the team in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda. He completes the driver line-up for the team and will be joined by previously announced Jake Eidson.
“We are excited to have Danilo as part of our team this season,” said team owners Dominic and Nicholas Cape. “We watched him compete in the USF2000 Series in 2013, and we know he is a talented driver. We expect great things from him and Jake this season.”
Estrela, 20, began racing go-karts in his native Brazil at the age of 14 winning many races in his first year. He then moved to the Skip Barber National Series in 2011 where he found success. In 2012, he won two Skip Barber Summer Series races and finished second in the Skip Barber Winter Series with six wins.
Last season competing with Belardi Auto Racing, he finished seventh in the USF2000 Series standings. He finished on the podium four times and won the Analytic Systems USF2000 Grand Prix of Toronto (Round 7).
“I’ve known Nicholas and Dominic since 2012 when we started talking about their winning F1600 program,” said Estrela. “I know how much effort and professionalism they put into everything they run, so joining the team makes me feel very confident going into the 2014 season. There are no excuses to not be at the top of the podium with the Cape brothers."
Estrela will drive the No. 3 Mazda for Cape Motorsports.
“Last season, I had a shot at the championship, and I was in the top three until Mid-Ohio,” Estrela said. “I was trying to get another win, trying too hard, when in reality, I should have tried to collect every point I could. That's my goal for this year, to make as many points as possible. If it means finishing second, third or fourth I will take it, so we are at the top on the point standings at the season finale."
The team and drivers are busy preparing for the Cooper Tires WinterFest, which will be held over two weekends, February 21-22 at NOLA Motorsports Park in New Orleans and February 25-26 at Barber Motorsports Park. Each weekend will consist of three races (six races total). Cape Motorsports driver Neil Alberico claimed the WinterFest title in 2013.
