St. Petersburg, Fla. -- After a busy off-season, St. Petersburg-based Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing is ready to start the 2015 Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda season in a familiar place for this weekend’s Cooper Tires Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. Drivers Nico Jamin and Aaron Telitz hope to claim victory in front of the hometown crowd.
Jamin and Telitz will take the green flag for round 1 of the championship on the 1.8-mile, 14-turn street course on Saturday, March 28. Cape Motorsports has helped produce the last four series champions. The team hopes this year is no different.
Frenchman Jamin already has one championship under his belt after claiming the Cooper Tires Winterfest title earlier this year. Driving the No. 2 Synova Automotive Eco-Plastics USF2000 Mazda, the young driver claimed his first North American victory on his way to the championship.
Telitz, who will drive the No. 3 Rice Lake Weighing Systems USF2000 Mazda, finished fifth in the Winterfest. Both drivers are now focused on the championship.
“Nico and Aaron were both very impressive in the Winterfest Championship,” said team owners Dominic and Nicholas Cape. “We think we have a good chance to return to victory lane this weekend.”
The drivers will take the track Friday at 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. for practice, followed by qualifying on Saturday at 8 a.m. Race 1 goes green later than day at 10:15 a.m. (40 minutes). Race 2 is scheduled for Sunday at 8:55 a.m.
It will be a busy weekend for the Cape Motorsports team. In addition to USF2000, Cape Motorsports is also campaigning three cars in the Pro Mazda Championship presented by Cooper Tires with drivers Neil Alberico, Daniel Burkett and Florian Latorre.
