Elkhart Lake, Wisc. - With a second place result at the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship event at Lucas Oil Raceway just under one month ago, Alex Baron and Legacy Autosport were looking to carry that momentum into Road America.
Showing great pace in practice and qualifying, the racing gods were not on Baron's side once the wheel-to-wheel action commenced on Saturday afternoon.
"I am not sure if we could have done a better job," explained Legacy Autosport's Mike Meyer. "We had great pace and looked like we were going to be able to challenge for podium results, and maybe even the race win but contact took us out of contention in both races."
After claiming the fourth quickest lap time in the one and only thirty-minute practice session, Baron and Legacy Autosport secured a front row starting spot for Saturday's race. Qualifying two saw another top-ten result with a ninth place finish.
Meyer added, "Track positioning hurt us in qualifying for Sunday's race. Unfortunately, we did not get the lap that we needed when the tires were at their best, but starting inside row five is not a bad position at all."
The top-ten results stopped once the once wheel-to-wheel action commenced as contact took Baron out of contention in both races. A first lap incident punctured two tires and damaged the #14 entry of Baron and after a few trips to pit lane for repairs, finished the race in the 18
th position. Back to the track on Sunday and looking to salvage a good result on the weekend, Baron was running inside the top-five before contact broke the front wing of his Legacy Autosport machine and he was once again forced to pit lane for repairs.
"Obviously the results were disappointing, but we need to take away the positives of the weekend," continued Meyer. "I think we showed the pace to compete with the best in the series, even with a single car effort. Our preparation, fit, finish and speed is second to none, and we will continue to do the best we can while striving for the best results possible."
Set to take part in the Road To Indy series test this week at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, rounds eight and nine of the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship will take place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on the Streets of Toronto July 12-14.
