ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing driver Matias Köykkä claimed the 2012 F1600 Formula F Championship at Watkins Glen International this past weekend.
Köykkä, driver of the No. 10 Spectrum Honda, had a 15-point lead heading into the final weekend and did what he had to do to win the championship. After winning the first race, claiming the pole and finishing fourth in the second, he was crowned champion.
“It was a team effort all the way," Köykkä said. “I want to thank Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing, Spectrum and Borland Racing Developments, my family and partners. It was an eventful season with ups and downs, but the crew made a fantastic job to make us fast all season long. I hope I get to do more of what I enjoy next season. For now we'll take a moment to enjoy, and then head straight to next year’s preparations.”
Neil Alberico drove the No. 9 Spectrum Honda for the team. Alberico, who completed his rookie USF2000 Series season earlier this year, replaced Shae Davies who was recovering from an injury. Alberico showed he was the right person for the job with his two podium finishes.
"I think it is safe to say the team worked very well together as a whole to solidify the championship last weekend - it took a team effort to win,” Alberico said. “We set goals for ourselves, and accomplished them session by session. Huge congratulations to Matias Köykkä and all the guys at Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing for working hard all season long to earn their championship. It was a pleasure for me to be a part of it all.”
“We couldn’t have asked for a better result,” said team owners Dominic and Nicholas Cape. “Matias showed all season that he deserved to be the Champion and he proved that at Watkins Glen. We also want to congratulate Neil on a great weekend, and thank our crew, Borland Racing Developments, and Braille Batteries along with Honda and Quicksilver Race engines for all their support all season long.”
The team drivers combined to win seven of 12 races and nine poles, 14 podiums and seven fastest race laps. In addition to Köykkä’s four wins and seven poles, Davies also had three wins and two poles in the championship-winning Spectrum chassis.
