Last week I had a two-day USF2000 test at Road America and then went straight to Indianapolis for a conference for my sponsor Coloplast. It was an amazing week first being at one of my favorite race tracks (I won two races at Road America last year) and then getting to meet a bunch of new people at the Spina Bifida Association Conference.
It felt really good to be back in my racecar, especially at Road America with it's challenging turns, curves, elevation changes and high-speed straights. All the USF2000 teams were at the test, 22 drivers total, and I was fourth quickest overall, a result I'm very happy with. I got a lot of work done, figuring out tire management as the track temperature changed throughout the day, how to deal with the push at the kink and how to hustle the car through the corners. There is a huge difference between the USF2000 car and the Skip Barber Formula car that I raced at Road America last year especially the sliding and braking in the carousel. Overall, I had a lot of issues to deal with and resolve and I'm happy that throughout the 2 days I had consistent lap times. I can't wait to get back in the car for the race at Mid-Ohio, 3-5 August, just a few weeks away.
Right after I finished the test we headed to Indianapolis for the Spina Bifida Association Conference (photo). The Spina Bifida Association promotes the prevention of Spina Bifida and enhances the lives of those affected by it. Spina Bifida is a birth defect where the backbone and spinal canal don't close at birth resulting in partial or complete paralysis of the legs. It's kinda a different dynamic as Spina Bifida is a birth defect and my health issue is a result of an accident, but the bottom line is we both need to use catheters and Coloplast is the best! So, I got to talk shop with a bunch of new friends, sign my hero cards and let kids sit in my race car. It was cool to again get to show people that you can still lead a normal life, challenge yourself and have fun even if you are in a wheelchair.
My next adventure is this weekend where I will get some seat time in my kart at the Championship Enduro Series at Grattan Raceway near Grand Rapids. This is a big annual event and we have a lot of fun both on and off the track at this event. The competition is tight and I look forward to being quick and bringing home a couple wins.
Then I'm off to Houston on 14 July for the National Spinal Cord Injury Association event for my sponsor Coloplast.
