FORTVILLE, Ind. – Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park has become a popular attraction the week of the Indy 500, hosting its annual Carb Night Classic race event. Hometown driver Al Morey of Jay Howard Driver Development (JHDD) scored his best qualifying of the season on the 0.686-mile oval in the Cooper Tires Freedom 75 this past Friday night.

“It feels good to continually progress every race weekend,” said the USF2000 rookie driver. “Top-10 finishes are what we are aiming for, and the points that come with those top-10 finishes are needed when it comes to the overall driver championship. I’m sitting in the 11th position just two points outside 10th after this weekend, if we continue with our current progress with ten total races left in the season, I should be fighting in the top five in no time.”

While Morey managed to secure a sixth-place start for the 75-lap night race, a yellow flag ruined his chances at a run away for his best result of the season as he had managed to create some distance between him and his fellow competitors. When the checkered flag flew just before 9:30pm, Morey landed himself an eighth-place finish in front of friends, family and partners and helped put three JHDD drivers in the top 10.

“Overall, I’d say this month of May was a great energizer for the rest of the season,” added Morey. “I managed to score my best finish in the Indy Grand Prix and then my best qualifying in the oval race here at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park, so I’m really looking forward to what the rest of the 2023 season has in store.”

Morey will carry his current momentum into the next USF2000 Championship Presented by Cooper Tires event in just a few weeks' time at Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin’s four-mile road course of Road America June 15-18.
