KAYLEN FREDERICK
No. 81 Pilot ONE Racing Team Pelfrey Mazda
Qualified 8th // Finished 6th
- Frederick had an outstanding weekend as he was quickest in practice, despite being one of eight oval rookies on-track.
- The 15-year-old battled his way to sixth after losing multiple positions on the start.
- The rookie had an intense 10-lap battle with Lucas Kohl, defending his position and ultimately pulling away to challenge teammate Megennis on the final lap.
“I started the weekend struggling to get up to speed, however once I got comfortable at my first-ever oval, I was quickest on track! The main issue I faced was qualifying - I couldn't quite get it down due to the new procedure that we run for ovals. The pace was definitely there in the race and I fought my way forward as I was getting more comfortable and confident.”
ROBERT MEGENNIS
No. 80 Palo Alto Networks Team Pelfrey Mazda
Qualified 5th // Finished 5th
- Megennis had an excellent start as he moved around the outside of Alex Barron for fourth-place where he nearly caught third-place in the 60-lap feature.
- On the final lap, Megennis was challenged by teammate Frederick, however he defended his position by a less than a tenth of a second margin.
- This is his third top-five finish of the 2017 season.
“I thought I drove well all weekend and I’m ready to head into Toronto where Team Pelfrey will show up and just kill it.”
AYLA AGREN
No. 82 Harding Group Team Pelfrey Mazda
Qualified 6th // Finished 8th
- After over a month away from the cockpit, Ayla quickly found herself up to speed leading the Pelfrey trio in the opening-weekend test session.
- Through a consistent two lap qualifying effort, nearing an average speed of 130 mph, Agren completed an all Pelfrey third row to start Sunday afternoon's 60-lap race.
- Although ultimately dropping two spots from her sixth-place starting position, Agren showed strong pace and confident side-by-side race-craft on her way to a top-ten finish.
“It wasn’t the result we needed, but the car really came to me toward the end and I felt like I could keep up with the fast cars. Unfortunately, not the result we wanted this weekend, but I gained a lot of new knowledge for bigger oval racing. I can't thank the team enough for all their hard-work this weekend and for giving me a good car. ”
