ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Two races remain to determine the two Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda driver championships. After clinching the 2012 Team Championship at Baltimore, the Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing team drivers are in position to win both the National and Championship Class Driver Championship at Virginia International Raceway this weekend, September 13-15.
Matthew Brabham (No. 83) and Spencer Pigot (No. 2) have combined for 10 of 12 overall wins this season. The two have battled for poles, victories and the top spot of the driver championship. Pigot has six wins and three poles. Brabham has four wins and seven poles. They are currently 1-2 with Brabham leading Pigot by 41 points.
“It’s been a great year for Matthew and Spencer,” team owners Dominic and Nicholas Cape said. “The two have battled for the wins all season, and combined they have won 10 of 12 races. That’s fantastic. They are putting on a great show for the fans.”
National class driver Henrik Furuseth, driving the No. 32, is currently second in the class point standings. The driver has five class wins in 11 races. With his victory in Race 1 at Baltimore, he cut the points lead to seven points with two races remaining. At only 16-years-old, the young driver has shown the skill of drivers much older.
No. 3 driver Trent Hindman is sixth in the Championship Class driver point standings. While bad luck has plagued him throughout the season, he has shown real improvement and is ready to stand on the podium at VIR. His best finish this season is fourth.
“We knew we have a lot of talent on our team when the season started,” the Capes said. “To see all four drivers progress as much as they have is amazing to watch. It was great to win the team championship at Baltimore and being in the position to also win both driver championships is amazing. Kudos to our drivers and all our team members for their hard work. Now it’s time to head to VIR and try to pick up some more trophies.”
